It's also known that a person's emotional and physical health can benefit from living with an animal. So, what is this strange chemistry between people and their pets, and can it teach us anything about being human? Vet Ian Paterson explains.

2006/2007 Programme

Seminar Programme for 2006/2007:

Under Pressure (7th September 2006)

Ian Doyle, snooker star Stephen Hendry’s manager, entertained his audience with anecdotes from the world of sport, seen from the inside. But tucked in along with the humour were insights into the difference between good players and great players, and the difference between sport pressure and life pressure.

A great player performs better under pressure, whereas pressure gets to good players. Life pressures are different, and have got the better of some great and good sportsmen, just like the rest of us. A good manager can help, but only so far.

Ian described how he had spotted Stephen as a youngster, and nurtured him through his career to several World Snooker Championships. (Stephen Hendry was once asked, “Who has been the biggest influence on your career?” His answer: “My parents and Ian Doyle.”) “The ability to spot potential greatness was the talent a successful manager had to have. For instance,” he reminisced in conclusion, “I once watched a young golfer at Carnoustie and instinctively knew he was good, but would never be great. I still remember his name. It was Tiger Woods.”

Time Out for Parents (5th October 2006)

Rena Black and Sharon Potter, both parents and both with backgrounds in education led this helpful and enjoyable seminar. A series of interactive exercises made some very powerful points, notably:

  • Parents experience a huge range of emotions in a single day, ranging from anger to pride;
  • Because of this it is no wonder parents get tired;
  • Negatives are not necessarily bad and are sometimes necessary, but
  • Positive feedback makes us feel good as parents. We need to remember that it makes our kids feel good about being kids too.
  • Parents need to increase the positives and decrease the negatives for their kids’ sake as well as their own.
